My areas of practice have gradually evolved into a concentration of estate planning (wills, trusts, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, probate matters, guardianships, and conservatorships); real estate matters and handling of small business-type transactions (forming corporations, limited liability companies, and partnerships). For many years I was a part-time public defender and handled principally child protection and termination of parental rights cases.

From the beginning the firm was a general practice office; and it is expected that that will be the same in the future, as this is the type of service that the citizens of the Northfield area community desire. We believe that honest representation at a modest cost is what the community needs. As has been said many times, practicing law is not a means to make a lot of money; but it is satisfying and interesting, and is enjoyable. Also, it feels good accomplishing objectives for clients.

I have long been active and involved in the community from the very beginning, including various civic organizations: Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce President 1962; Northfield Jaycees President 1961, Northfield Lions President 1965; Northfield United Fund Chairman 1959; Knights of Columbus Grand Knight 1956; Northfield Golf Club President 1965; and Secretary/Treasurer of Rice County Bar Association in 1967; Special Municipal Judge for Northfield from 1959 to 1965; Assistant Rice County Attorney part-time in 1966 and 1967; Mayor of Northfield 1969-1973 and 1991-1995 (eight years); served on the Community Resource Bank Board of Directors for approximately 25 years (1972 to 1997); served on Northfield Retirement Community Board of Directors for approximately 6 years from 1998 to 2004; and have been on the Review Board of the Cambridge State Hospital and its successors, serving developmentally disabled clients and mentally challenged individuals from 1982 to the present. My practice centers on serving clients and their individual needs as they progress through life. This includes helping people with juvenile and child custody and support, divorce, purchasing real estate, planning for retirement, and wealth transfer. My goal is to help people solve problems at a reasonable cost.

Being a small town lawyer means educating, counseling, and litigating on the law’s purpose, applying it to people’s lives, settling disputes, and when necessary seeking justice through the courts.

We are committed to listening to your problems and helping you find solutions.  Whether you are charged with a crime, find yourself in a divorce, or are trying to help your parents manage their affairs, you need a lawyer who understands you and how the law applies to you.

My commitment to serving and helping others extends to community affairs, including the following: former city council member, active member of St. Dominic’s Church, the Northfield Lions, and the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce; Assistant chess coach at Northfield Schools.

For over 20 years, my practice has focused on helping people.  For 7 years, I represented low income clients as a Staff Attorney with Legal Aid of Northeastern Minnesota.  My practice with Legal Aid focused primarily on family law matters, including divorce, child custody, parenting time and child support.

I then spent 14 years serving as a part-time elected County Attorney.  During my time as County Attorney, I represented the State in a variety of legal matters, including:  criminal prosecution, child protection, adult protection, planning and zoning, civil commitment, condemnation, easements, municipal law, public employment law, child support and government data practices.  As County Attorney, I served on several statewide committees, including the Minnesota County Attorney’s Association Board of Directors.

During my time as a County Attorney, I also maintained a small private practice where I represented clients in divorce, child custody, and child support actions.  I also represented clients in guardianship/conservatorship, and landlord/tenant matters.

When people become involved with the legal system, it is usually one of the most difficult times in their life.  In my practice, I try to get people through their legal problems as quickly and as economically as possible.  My goal is to ensure that my clients are treated fairly and respectfully, and that their voices are heard.

Outside of my legal practice, I have always been involved in my community.  Some of the organizations I have been involved with include: the Virginia Teen Center, First Covenant Church of Virginia, Trinity Lutheran Church of Benson, Humane Society of Swift County, Benson Area Community Foundation, Benson Sidekicks Tae Kwon Do, Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Faribault, Rice County Historical Society, and Sertoma.

I have spent the majority of my career advocating for others. Before going into law, I worked in both the social work and healthcare science fields. During law school, I worked for the Office of Lawyers Professional Responsibility and the Anoka County Attorney’s Office. I also made the Dean’s List, earned several Dean’s awards, and was an Editor on law review. After graduating from law school, I spent nearly two years as a Judicial Law Clerk for a Minnesota District Court Judge in Hennepin County. I assisted the judge in numerous

criminal and civil trials, motion hearings, and case management, and performed a significant amount of legal research and writing. My clerkship provided invaluable experience and in-depth exposure to both criminal law and family law. Now I am enjoying building my practice in a small-town firm where I have the opportunity to work with all types of clients and help others with a variety of legal issues.

Outside of work, I like to stay active and involved in my community. I am a member of the Rice County Bar Association, Northfield Chamber of Commerce, and the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Lonsdale, Minnesota. Having grown up in Lonsdale, I can appreciate the needs, concerns, and problems people from a small community face. As a complement to my small town roots, I have also lived in Chicago, San Diego, and Minneapolis, so I understand how to relate to people from all different backgrounds and in a variety of circumstances. My objective as a lawyer is to help right wrongs, fight injustice, and provide support to those in need of legal services.
